What is the origin of Valentine's Day?

 

Valentine's Day, a celebration for lovers worldwide. Romantic dinners, declarations of love, gifts...

Although different stories explain the origin of Valentine's Day, it actually began as a libertine celebration during the Roman Lupercalia, February 13-15, at the end of the Roman year which began on March 1 . 

This pagan religious tradition, often culminating in bacchanalian revelry, was countered by Pope Gelasius I in the 5th century. He sought to establish a festival of purification of the Virgin Mary on February 2nd. Romans paraded demurely by torchlight and candlelight. This festival would later become Candlemas. 

But this procession did not prevent the Romans from continuing to participate in the Lupercalia. 

Gelasius I therefore decided to celebrate a saint on the eve of the pagan festival, Valentine of Terni, who died on February 14, and established a festival of spiritual love. 

But the Pope fails. The Romans seize upon the figure of Saint Valentine, whom they also celebrate on February 14th during libertine festivals, and organize love lotteries where the lovebirds are nicknamed Valentin and Valentine.

 

The celebration of Valentine's Day has evolved over the centuries.  

In 15th century Britain, this day was commemorated as a lovers' festival due to the belief that birds chose February 14th to mate.  

Valentine's Day became a commercial holiday in the United States in the mid-19th century, with the sale of cards reminiscent of the small notes exchanged between Valentines.  

Then, with the removal of this holiday from the religious calendar in 1969, it became a tradition.  

The 20th century marked the end of the religious festival, and gradually became the commercial Valentine's Day celebration we know today, but also an additional opportunity to celebrate love.
